On the 1st of October 2024, the Lethe project team hosted a workshop titled “Digital Solutions to Reduce the Risk Factors Causing Dementia” at the EGI2024 Conference in Lecce, Italy. The annual EGI Conference brings together international scientific communities, computing and service providers, European projects, security experts, community managers, and policy makers gather to take research and innovation in data-intensive processing and analytics forward, in a safe and open environment.

The Lethe workshop was divided into two main sections. The first section included a series of short presentations and a panel discussion. The second section was a workshop discussion including active involvement from the audience.

Jon Switters from the Lisbon Council kicked off proceedings introducing the workshop and providing an overview to the Lethe project. Vassilis Loukas from FORTH joined the rest of the team virtually and explained how the Lethe project is capturing patient data through the App. This was followed by Hannes Hilberger from FH Joanneum who presented the Lethe App, clinical trial monitoring system (CTMS) used in the project and risk profiling. Finally, Ignacio Lamata showed how the project is using the EGI Fedcloud for the Lethe infrastructure.

The panel discussion included very interesting questions such as the challenges expected from the training of the AI models, how the nature of health data has affected the Lethe architecture design and implementation and additional features of the Lethe app. The floor was then opened to the audience for additional questions.

During the second section of the workshop, the audience was split into 3 breakout groups which focussed on the following issues:

  1. Use of AI products and applications in the health field (benefits and limitations, challenges, best practices).
  2. Health data management.
  3. End user engagement – how can we improve enagagement within research projects.

It was a fantastic opportunity for Lethe team members to discuss with other attendees these important topics. The project team would like to thank everyone at EGI for the organisation of such a fantastic event.

If you were unable to attend, please don’t miss out on our upcoming webinar series where we will be discussing issues such as this and many more!
